Choose Golf Balls that are right for your Level of Play
Which golf balls provide the longest distance? All balls approved by the USGA must meet specific limitations on the distance that a ball can travel. There are five basic standards that a golf ball must meet in order to pass the USGA conformity tests. 1. Weight: The ball cannot weight more than 1.62 ounces. 2. Size: The diameter must be at least 1.68 inches. 3. Distance: The average distance hit by a club head at 109 mph cannot exceed 296.8 yards. Total distance includes the carry and roll of the ball. 4. Initial Velocity: A mechanical arm traveling at 143.8 feet per second strikes the ball. Any ball that takes off faster than 250 feet per second fails the velocity test. There is a 2%variance allowance.
5. Symmetry: Balls are tested to make sure they perform consistently when struck.
All balls approved for competition by the United States Golf Association must meet the above standards. Therefore, any differences in distance is very slight.
Make up of balls
1.Three piece construction consists of a rubber core, covered with a thin rubber thread and cover, usually natural balata.
2. With greater use of synthetic cover materials, a solid core replaced the two piece interior. The two piece designs are easier to manufacture and usually cost less. They are the most used balls.
A three piece balata covered ball is preferred by many professionals, because of its soft feel and backspin. They also seem to provide better control around the green.
The two piece ball seems to achieve about 7 yards more distance than the three piece ball. Despite this, most professionals prefer the three piece balls, because of better control for short shots.
It is recommended that an amateur or recreational golfer spends some time experimenting with balls to get a feel of how they perform.
